PTFE tape is wound onto pipe threads before assembly to fill the spiral gap and prevent leaks in low-pressure water, air, and some chemical lines. Twelve-metre rolls suit most bench work; wrap two or three turns clockwise so tightening the fitting beds the tape in rather than shearing it off. PTFE will not seal tapered threads that are damaged or cross-threaded — check the thread form first.

PVC insulating tape is specified by width, length, dielectric strength, and temperature range. Nineteen-millimetre tape is standard for cables up to 600 V; black remains flexible down to around zero Celsius, which matters in unheated sheds and outdoor junction boxes. The ten-pack format keeps a roll in the van and spares on the shelf.

Duct tape uses a cloth carrier and rubber-resin adhesive, so it conforms to curves and tears by hand without scissors. Silver is general-purpose; black hides on dark components; white and red mark hazard zones or colour-code pipework. Duct tape is not a permanent fix for high-vibration or wet environments — the adhesive creeps and the cloth frays — but it holds long enough to finish the job and get the right fastener later.

Double-sided foam tape bonds two surfaces with a compressible core that fills small gaps and damps vibration. Twelve-millimetre and nineteen-millimetre widths suit trim clips and number plates; twenty-five-millimetre and fifty-millimetre widths work for larger panels, tool-chest drawer liners, and door seals. The green polyester backing peels off to expose the second adhesive face. Foam tape grips better on clean, dry, slightly rough surfaces than on oily or dusty ones — wipe with alcohol or degreaser before you stick.
