Grit choice depends on surface condition and finish required. 40 and 60 clear rust, scale, and heavy corrosion — use them to prep steel before welding or painting. 80 sits in the middle: rough enough to knock back casting marks, fine enough to prep for topcoat. 120 and 150 are finishing grades for polished bores, journal surfaces, or anywhere you're chasing tolerance and can't afford deep scratches.

The 25mm width suits small-diameter work — wrap it round a dowel or mandrel for bore work, fold it for tight corners, or tear strips for hand-polishing. Twill backing holds up better than paper when you're working wet or flexing the cloth repeatedly. The 50m rolls last longer on production jobs or multi-stage prep; 25m covers occasional work without the cloth sitting on the shelf long enough to load up with workshop dust.

Match the grit to the task, not to what's left on the roll. Jumping from 60 to 150 leaves the coarse scratches visible under finish. Step through 80 or 120 if surface matters. If you're just cleaning up before fit, one pass with 60 or 80 does it.
