Brakes

Brake pipe fittings and unions for replacing damaged threads or joining sections of hydraulic brake line. Metric M10 × 1mm and imperial 3/8″ UNF threads to suit most car and light commercial brake systems. Male-to-male and female-to-female unions for extending or repairing runs; T-pieces for splitting lines at a junction. Sealey assortments include common sizes for workshop stock.

Match the thread pitch to the vehicle's brake system — metric M10 × 1mm on most European cars, 3/8″ UNF × 24tpi on older British and some American models. Cross-threading a brake union ruins the seat and creates a leak path under pressure, so check the pitch with a thread gauge before fitting.

Male-to-male unions join two female flare nuts on the pipe ends. Female-to-female unions join two male flare nuts, typically when extending a single length of pipe or replacing a damaged section mid-run. Three-way connectors split a single feed line to two outlets, common at rear axle T-junctions or ABS modulator blocks. Short and long variants differ in thread engagement length — long nuts give more thread for seized or corroded ports, short nuts fit tighter spaces near subframe rails.

Copper-nickel brake pipe is less prone to work-hardening than pure copper and holds a double flare better under vibration. When making up new pipe, leave enough slack for suspension travel and avoid tight-radius bends that stress the flare seat. Torque unions to the vehicle manufacturer's spec — overtightening collapses the flare, undertightening weeps fluid.
