Magnet strength matters. Light-duty pick-ups (typically under 1kg capacity) handle washers, clips, and small screws. Heavy-duty models — 3.6kg here — lift sockets, nuts, and heavier fasteners without the magnet letting go halfway out. Check the pole face diameter: a wider disc grips broader surfaces; a narrow tip reaches deeper gaps.

Telescopic shafts extend reach but add flex. Aluminium or steel tubes hold steadier than thin brass; some tools flex enough under load that you're better off with a fixed-length pick-up for routine bay work. LED models help in dark corners — battery life varies, so twist-on types that you can switch off between jobs last longer than always-on button cells.

Inspection mirrors: glass stays clearer than acrylic but chips if dropped. Ball-joint heads adjust to more angles than fixed mounts.
