Length determines jaw capacity and leverage. A 150mm wrench opens to roughly 19mm, a 300mm to 34mm, a 450mm to 57mm. Longer handles give more torque but need clearance to swing. Pick the smallest size that fits the fastener — oversized wrenches slip easier and round corners.

Jaw play matters. Cheaper wrenches have loose threads on the adjusting screw, so the jaw rocks under load and chews flats. Check the worm gear meshes tight when you spin the thumbwheel. Forged-steel bodies hold up better than cast; drop-forged tools flex less and the jaws stay parallel longer.

The Ni-Fe finish on Premier's sets resists thread corrosion better than plain chrome if the wrench lives outdoors or in a wet van. Siegen's single wrenches are workshop basics — no coating, heavy enough to take a hammer tap if a nut's seized. Sets are handy if you work pipework or agricultural machinery where fastener sizes vary and you want three spans without swapping tools mid-job.

Crow's foot adjustables adapt a ratchet into an open-end wrench for recessed fasteners. The 1/2" square drive version opens from 6mm to 45mm, useful on hydraulic fittings or gearbox covers where a fixed spanner won't reach. Not a substitute for a proper socket when you can fit one, but it clears obstructions a ring spanner can't.
