Picking the Right Tape

Blade width affects rigidity and standout — how far the tape extends before it buckles. A 25mm blade typically stands out to around 3m unsupported; 19mm to roughly 2m; 16mm to 1.5m or less. If you're measuring alone across ceiling joists or door frames, wider blades save time. For tight spaces or pocket carry, 16mm is enough.

Auto-lock mechanisms hold the blade at any point until you press the release. Rubber overmould grips better when wet or gloved. Check the belt clip — stamped steel clips bend or snap; moulded or riveted clips last longer. End hooks should be riveted, not crimped, and the hook should float slightly to compensate for inside versus outside measurements.

Blades wear at the first metre — paint and scale markings rub off where you pull most often. Nylon-coated blades resist this longer than plain steel. If the tape won't retract cleanly or the hook is bent past square, replace it before you mis-cut expensive stock.
