Start with the work you're doing. Scarifiers rip out thatch and moss — electric models suit flat lawns up to a few hundred square metres; above that, you'll want petrol or a tow-behind if you run a compact tractor. Tillers break compacted soil for beds and vegetable patches. A 1500 W electric cultivator turns over existing beds cleanly; for breaking virgin ground or heavy clay, consider a petrol model with more torque and larger tine diameter.
Petrol mowers split into hand-propelled and self-propelled. Hand-propelled works fine on level ground under 200 m²; you're pushing the weight, so keep deck size sensible. Self-propelled makes sense on slopes, larger areas, or if you're mowing weekly through the growing season and don't want the workout. Engine size scales with deck width — 127 cc handles 16-inch decks, 170 cc drives 20-inch without bogging down in thick spring growth. Check the cutting-height range matches your lawn type; most domestic mowers run 25–75 mm, which covers everything except fine ornamental turf.
Rotary sieves separate stones from topsoil or compost. A 16-inch drum processes enough volume for raised beds and borders without the tedium of a flat riddle. Collapsible water butts fold flat when not in use — 100 L fits a small patio, 250 L catches enough runoff from a shed or garage roof to see you through dry spells if you're watering pots or a greenhouse. PVC construction with a zipped lid keeps debris out and a drain tap low enough to gravity-feed a watering can.
