Match the driver to the fastener head. Phillips and Pozidriv look similar but the geometries differ — a Phillips in a Pozidriv screw will cam out under load and chew the recess. Torx (TRX-Star) gives better torque transfer than either, common on automotive trim and modern machinery. For hex-socket cap screws, a hex-bit driver handles higher torque than an Allen key of the same size.

Digital torque screwdrivers matter when you're assembling electronics housings, instrument panels, or any fastener with a published torque spec below 10 Nm. The 0.05–5 Nm range suits small fixings; 2–10 Nm covers larger assemblies without risking stripped threads. Calibration drift happens over time — if torque accuracy is critical, check calibration annually.

VDE-approved screwdrivers are insulated to 1000 V AC and individually tested. Essential if you work on live panels or control gear. The insulation is moulded, not dipped — check for cracks before every shift. Standard screwdrivers have no electrical protection; do not assume a plastic handle is enough.

Ratchet and bit-holder drivers speed up repetitive fastening. The ratchet mechanism adds bulk, so they're less useful in tight recesses. Impact driver sets work with a hammer blow to free seized screws — the bits are hardened to take the shock, but standard screwdriver bits will shatter. Extra-long shafts reach recessed fixings; the trade-off is reduced rigidity and more flex under torque.
