Electrician's shears typically feature angled or stepped jaws that let you strip insulation without nicking the conductor. VDE approval matters if you're working near live circuits — the insulation is tested to 1000 V and colour-coded for inspection. Check the rating stamp; counterfeit handles exist.
Cable shears use compound leverage or ratchet mechanisms to multiply force. A 250 mm tool with compound action will cut 10 mm² copper cleanly; trying that with side-cutters mushrooms the wire and strains your wrist. For armoured or aluminium cable, verify the stated capacity in mm² — manufacturers test on annealed copper, and harder alloys need headroom.
Wire rope and spring cutters have short, heavy jaws that concentrate force at the pivot. They work for piano wire, brake cable, and coil springs up to about 3 mm depending on the tool. Beyond that, you need bolt croppers or an angle grinder. The cutting edge should be hardened past 55 HRC; softer steel rounds over after a few cuts on music wire.
Universal heavy-duty shears bridge the gap when you're cutting rubber hose, thin sheet, webbing, or composite gasket material on site. They won't replace a knife or tin snips for dedicated work, but they live in a tool bag without the same snagging risk.
