Pick the blade system first. Snap-off knives suit repetitive scoring where fresh edges matter—carpet, insulation, vinyl. Utility knives with replaceable trapezoid or hook blades handle packaging, strapping, and sheet materials without the snap-off risk of breaking mid-cut. Auto-load models reload from an internal magazine; manual types need the old blade removed before fitting the new one.
Locking matters when the knife stays extended between cuts. Slide locks hold the blade at set positions but can shift under side load. Twist locks and cam levers grip tighter—worth it if you're prying or working overhead. Auto-retract knives pull the blade back the moment thumb pressure lifts, which reduces accidental cuts when you set the tool down or reach into a pouch.
Handle width and grip texture affect control in gloves or when wet. Narrow folding knives fit tight pockets; wider utility knives balance better for extended cutting. Metal belt clips outlast plastic ones. Check whether replacement blades are standard 18 mm snap-off, universal trapezoid, or a proprietary fit before stocking spares.
