Compressor oils split into mineral and fully synthetic. Mineral oils suit intermittent-duty piston compressors; synthetic formulations run cooler and last longer in rotary screw units that see daily use. Check the viscosity grade in the compressor manual — ISO VG 46 and VG 68 are common, but ratings vary by make. Screw compressor oil is not interchangeable with standard engine oil; additives differ and contamination voids warranties.

Hydraulic jack oil is a low-viscosity ISO 22 or ISO 32 hydraulic fluid. Heavier oils slow the ram and strain seals; lighter fluids leak past worn pistons. Top up with the same grade you drained out. If the jack foams or creeps under load, the oil is contaminated or the wrong spec.

Cutting oils reduce heat and clear swarf when drilling, tapping, or turning steel. Soluble cutting oil mixes with water (typical ratios 5–20:1) for flood coolant on lathes and mills; neat cutting oil runs undiluted in hand-fed operations or where rust is a concern. Soluble emulsions need regular testing — bacteria grow in stale mix and the fluid turns rancid. Neat oils stick to the tool but smoke at high speeds.

EP2 lithium grease cartridges fit standard grease guns. EP2 is a multi-purpose grade with extreme-pressure additives for loaded bearings, chassis points, and slideways. Higher NLGI numbers (EP3, EP4) are stiffer and used in vertical bearings or high-temperature applications; EP2 covers most workshop needs. Store cartridges upright and check the nozzle is clean before fitting — dirt in the grease scores bearing races.
