Cutting compound removes surface defects — oxidation, overspray, light scratches, buffer trails — by abrading a thin layer of clear coat or paint. Medium grade cuts faster and handles deeper marks; fine grade leaves less haze and needs less follow-up polishing. Both work by hand or with a machine polisher, though machine application is faster and more consistent on larger panels.
Super polymer polish is a finishing step, not a cutting product. It burnishes the paint after compounding, removes any remaining micro-marring, and leaves a slick surface that resists contamination. If the paint is already in good shape, you can skip the compound and go straight to polymer polish.
Match the grade to the defect. Start with the least aggressive option that will do the job — fine compound removes most swirls and light oxidation without cutting through thin modern clear coats. Move to medium only if fine won't level the surface. Work in small sections, wipe off residue with a clean microfibre cloth, and inspect under direct light before moving on. Compounding generates heat, especially with a machine — keep the pad moving, don't lean on it, and avoid edges and body lines where you can burn through to primer.
