Axes
Axes for splitting, felling, and general groundwork. Premier hand axes and felling axes have fibreglass shafts that dampen shock and won't split like wood. The railroad pick axe combines a pointed pick and a cutting edge for breaking ground or prying roots. Choose by head weight: 1.5lb for lighter trim work, 3.5lb for serious wood, and the pick axe when you need leverage and penetration in compacted soil or between stones.

Fibreglass handles absorb more shock than timber and won't crack at the eye if you overstrike. Head weight matters more than swing speed—let a 3.5lb felling axe do the work rather than forcing a lighter tool. Keep the edge sharp; a dull axe glances and kicks, a sharp one bites and holds. Grind at the original bevel angle, roughly 25–30° for hardwood, slightly blunter if you're splitting knotty or frozen timber.
The railroad pick is a different tool. One end digs, the other chops. Use it for mattock work—trenching clay, breaking up root balls, levering rocks out of postholes. The pick end concentrates force on a small point; useful in ground too hard for a spade, but it'll bend if you pry against something solid. Match the axe to the task and you'll get through it faster with less effort.
