Non-Sparking Tools

Non-sparking combination spanners for work around flammable vapours, dust, or gases. Copper–beryllium alloy, so the tool won't throw a spark if it strikes steel or grinds against another surface. Commonly used in petrochemical plants, grain silos, paint booths, refineries, and anywhere ATEX or explosion-risk protocols apply.

The material is a copper–beryllium alloy, roughly 2% beryllium. It's softer than steel—you'll mark the jaws if you treat them like chrome vanadium—but the trade-off is the inability to ignite an atmosphere. These spanners are double-ended: open jaw one side, ring the other, same as a standard combination spanner. Sizes run from 8 mm through to 22 mm, plus a 13-piece set if you need the common range in one go.

Check what your site permits. Some operations specify copper–beryllium, others allow aluminium–bronze (slightly harder, lower spark risk but not zero). If the risk assessment calls for non-sparking and you're in a Zone 1 or Zone 2 area, copper–beryllium is the usual answer. The spanners are heavier than steel equivalents and the open jaw can spread under high load, so size the tool to the fastener and don't use a cheater bar.

Wipe them down after shifts in corrosive environments—copper alloys tarnish, and built-up residue can transfer onto stainless fixings. Store dry. If a jaw gets dinged, dress it with a fine file rather than forcing it onto an out-of-spec nut.
