Pick gloss for a tough, wipe-clean surface on machine guards, tool chests, or anything that takes regular knocks. Matt hides surface imperfections better and suits frames or brackets where shine isn't wanted. Satin sits between the two — less reflective than gloss, easier to clean than matt.
Primers go on bare metal before topcoat. Red oxide is traditional for ferrous steel; grey and grey zinc work on mixed substrates and give better colour hold-through if you're finishing in lighter shades. Let primer cure fully before overcoating — rushing it leaves the bond weak.
Black, white, and silver cover most workshop needs. Black hides oil stains, white shows up markings and labels, silver reflects heat on exhaust shields or engine parts. Thin coats dry faster and level better than one heavy pass. Work in a ventilated space and keep the lid sealed between uses — half-empty tins skin over quickly.
