Preparation Pads

Preparation pads for quick-change angle grinders and die grinders. Used for surface prep, paint and rust removal, cleaning welds, and conditioning metal before coating. Available in 50mm and 75mm diameters with coarse, medium, and fine grades to match the job — coarse for heavy rust and thick paint, medium for general cleaning and blending, fine for final prep and light scuffing.

Prep pads work differently to wire wheels or flap discs. The abrasive is bonded into an open nylon mesh, so they cut without loading up as fast and won't gouge the base metal the way a wire cup can. Coarse grade strips paint and corrosion quickly but leaves visible scratch marks — use it for initial cleaning, then step down. Medium handles most routine prep: removing light rust, cleaning back welds, scuffing between coats. Fine is for keying painted surfaces or polishing after medium grade, leaving a surface ready for primer without deep scratches.

The quick-change fitment uses a roloc-style twist-lock backing pad — no spanners, just push and twist to swap pads. Check your grinder or die grinder takes a quick-change mount; some smaller tools need a separate arbor. Pad diameter matters: 75mm suits most 115mm angle grinders and covers more area per pass, 50mm fits tighter spots and works on die grinders or right-angle tools. Run them at the grinder's normal speed — they're designed for tool RPM, not lathe or bench speeds. Replace the pad when the nylon wears down to the backing or when it stops cutting; forcing a worn pad just glazes the surface.
