Rotary Burrs

Rotary burrs handle shaping, deburring, porting, and weld cleanup faster than files or grinding wheels. Carbide stays sharp through steel, cast iron, and aluminium. Match the head profile to the job — ball for radii, cylindrical for slots, conical for chamfers — and fit the shank diameter to your die grinder or rotary tool chuck.

Tungsten carbide burrs cut harder materials than HSS and hold an edge longer under heat. The head geometry matters more than the size: a ball burr gives smooth concave shapes and inside corners, a cylindrical cuts flat-bottomed slots or steps, and a cone reaches tight angles or tapers holes. Ball-nose and arc profiles blend the two for complex contours.

Shank diameter dictates compatibility — 3 mm micro burrs fit most rotary multi-tools, 6 mm shanks suit standard die grinders. Single-cut flutes leave a smoother finish on aluminium and soft metals; double-cut (crosshatch) clears chips faster in steel but leaves coarser marks. Run carbide burrs slower than HSS to avoid chipping the cutting edge, especially in hardened stock. If the burr chatters or grabs, you're either pushing too hard or running too slow for the material. Sets cover the common profiles; individual burrs let you replace worn shapes without buying duplicates.
