Grit choice depends on the job. 40-grit strips paint, rust, or heavy stock quickly but needs follow-up passes. 60-grit handles general shaping and weld prep without tearing through material. 80-grit suits most metal finishing and hardwood smoothing. 100 and 120-grit are for final passes before coating or assembly—they won't remove much, but they leave a cleaner surface.

Belt life varies with pressure, material, and machine speed. Aluminium oxide abrasive works across wood, ferrous metals, and most plastics. Running a belt too slow generates heat and clogs the grit; too fast and it tears or tracks off. Check your sander's manual for the correct size—belt length and width must match the drum spacing and platen. A 12 × 456mm belt won't fit a machine spec'd for 20 × 520mm, even if you force it on.

Buy belts by the job, not the grit. If you're prepping fifty brackets, five belts at 60-grit will outlast two at 80-grit pushed too hard. Keep a range on hand so you're not jumping from 40 to 120 in one step—intermediate grits save time and abrasive.
