Foam density matters more than colour once you've used a few. Coarse (yellow) foam cuts compound fast but leaves visible marks — use it to level orange peel or remove oxidation. Medium (blue) and firm (orange) foams work for general polishing with cutting or one-step compounds. Soft (black) and ultra-soft (red) foams spread fine polish without marring, good for final gloss on paint or gelcoat. White dense foam sits somewhere between firm and soft — versatile for lighter correction work.

Hook-and-loop heads need a compatible backing plate on your machine. Check the thread or arbor size before you buy — M14 is common on 115mm and 125mm angle grinders, but smaller drills often take a plain 6mm or 8mm shank. The 80mm pads fit most compact polishers and die grinders; 150mm heads cover more area but need a bigger machine to swing them properly. Cotton and microfibre mops are loose-weave, so they fold into curves and tight gaps better than flat foam. Keep them for wax removal or light buffing where a pad would snag.

Foam wears unevenly if you lean on one edge. Flat pressure, medium speed, let the compound do the work. Torn foam still buffs, but it won't spread product evenly — replace it when the cells start breaking up. Wash foam pads in warm water after use if you want them to last more than a few panels. Dried compound clogs the cells and kills the cut.
