Abrasive Papers

Abrasive papers for hand-sanding, power sanders, and detail work. Choose grit by finish: coarse (40–60) for stock removal and stripping, medium (80–100) for shaping, fine (120–150) for prep before finishing, extra-fine (180–220) for inter-coat flatting, ultra-fine (240+) for final polish. Rolls suit bench dispensers or tear-to-length jobs; sheets fit floor sanders, detail tools, or cutting to size.

Grit number tells you particle size — lower cuts faster but leaves deeper scratches, higher gives a smoother finish but clogs quicker on soft woods or paint. Aluminium oxide is the default abrasive for wood and metal prep; silicon carbide (less common on general sheets) suits harder finishes. Backing weight matters: lighter cloth or paper tears easier but flexes into curves, heavier grades last longer on flat passes.

Match the format to the tool. Pre-cut sheets for detail sanders and multi-tools have punched or hook-and-loop patterns that only fit their own base plates — check the fixing method before ordering. Floor sanding sheets (typically 203 × 495 mm) clip into drum or orbital floor machines; they're open-coat to resist loading from varnish dust. Rolls give you flexibility: cut strips for profiled work, wrap dowels for curved edges, or load into a bench dispenser for repetitive cuts.

Start coarse, step up through grits — skipping more than one grade leaves scratches the finer paper can't remove. Keep the sheet flat and let the abrasive do the work; pressing harder just loads the grit and scorches the surface. Worksafe and Sealey cover most workshop needs without complications.
