Folding cranes suit mobile mechanics or workshops short on floor space; legs and boom fold flat after the job. Fixed frames offer more rigidity under load and speed up consecutive lifts—welded construction removes hinge play. Long-reach models extend the boom forward to clear radiator supports or subframe rails; extendable legs widen the footprint for stability when the load sits off-centre. Low-profile cranes fit under low bonnets or drop the hook into engine bays where height is tight.
Rated capacity applies at minimum boom extension and maximum leg width. Extending the boom or narrowing the legs shifts the load away from the pivot, reducing safe working load—most cranes print a capacity chart on the frame. Hydraulic rams are wear items; check for drift under load or slow retraction, both signs the seals need replacement. Match the ram part number to your crane model—bore diameter and stroke length vary between frames.
Castor diameter affects travel over uneven floors. Small castors snag on cables or floor joints; 150 mm or larger roll smoother under load. Locking castors on at least two corners stop the crane walking when you tension the lift. If you work alone, fit a load leveller to the hook—it lets you tilt the engine without a second pair of hands steadying the block.
