Check the saddle tilt before you commit. Most vertical jacks let you angle the head a few degrees to match bellhousing faces, but if you work on vehicles with offset mounts or angled cross-members, verify the adjustment range. Some models include quick-lift pedals that speed the initial raise; others use a standard pump handle throughout. Quick-lift cuts cycle time but adds a foot valve that can clog if you work in muddy workshops.

Telescopic rams suit deep engine bays or high-slung trucks where a fixed-height jack won't reach. The trade-off is more seals and a longer collapsed length, so the jack takes up more floor space even when stowed. If you mostly handle cars and light vans, a standard 500–600 kg jack with a fixed ram covers most transaxles and rear-wheel-drive boxes without the extra bulk.

Adjustable gearbox supports bolt to the saddle and cradle awkward shapes — bell housings with protruding slave-cylinder mounts, transfer cases with PTO flanges, or differentials with exposed pinion flanges. Match the support's capacity to the jack; a 1000 kg support on a 500 kg jack just overloads the ram.
