Axle Stands

Axle stands hold a raised vehicle steady while you work underneath. Jack it up, position the stands under a solid jacking point, lower the weight onto them, then pull the jack clear. These are sold in pairs with capacities from 2 to 15 tonnes per stand — pick a rating that comfortably exceeds your vehicle's axle weight, not its total kerb weight.

Match the stand height to your ground clearance and the work you're doing. Short stands work for low-slung machinery or where headroom is tight; taller stands give you working room under vans or tractors. Check the saddle shape — wide, flat tops spread the load better on chassis rails; some have a vee notch for round axle tubes.

Ratchet stands lock at set intervals; pin-and-hole designs let you drop the pin through any hole in the post. Ratchet is faster to adjust, pin-and-hole tends to feel more positive once it's set. Either works if the stand is rated correctly and placed on firm, level ground. Folding stands pack flat for tight toolboxes but sacrifice some base width — fine for lighter vehicles, less stable under a loaded commercial.

Use them in pairs on the same axle. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack — hydraulic seals leak, ratchets slip, and a falling chassis will kill you before you hear it move. Set both stands, rock the vehicle to settle the load, then check the jack lifts free before you slide under.
