Dual-action sanders orbit and rotate the pad simultaneously, which spreads scratch patterns and leaves a cleaner finish than single-motion models. A 150 mm pad covers ground quickly on vehicle panels and cabinet doors; smaller 125 mm units reach tighter radii. Variable speed matters if you switch between coarse levelling and fine finishing — run too fast with 240-grit and you'll burn through lacquer or veneer.

Belt sanders remove stock where a pad won't bite: door edges, welded seams, painted steel. Belt width and motor torque set the practical limit — a 260 W unit will bog down in hardwood if you lean on it, while a 750 W machine needs both hands and keeps moving. Grit progression depends on the substrate. Timber refinishing typically runs 80 / 120 / 180 / 240; metal prep for paint might stop at 120. Skipping grades leaves scratches the next grit can't remove, so you sand longer overall.
