Step up to 230mm for structural steel, thick plate, or high-volume work — the larger disc removes material faster but needs two hands and more space to manoeuvre.

Motor power matters less than you'd think once you're above 750W for a 115mm grinder. Higher wattage helps under sustained load (thick cuts, heavy grinding), but most tradespeople find 750–900W adequate for general use. Cordless models trade runtime for mobility — the 10.8V suits light grinding and cut-off work where dragging a lead is awkward, the 20V handles sustained cutting if you keep a spare battery charged.

Check the spindle thread (M14 is standard, but verify before ordering discs), the guard orientation (should rotate without tools), and whether the side handle is removable. Slim-body grinders fit between joists and into press frames where a standard barrel won't. If you're cutting stainless or ally, a variable-speed trigger helps, but most fixed-speed grinders run around 11,000 RPM, which works for steel and masonry discs.
