One Battery Platforms

One-battery platforms let you run multiple tools off the same rechargeable cell and charger. Buy a kit with batteries once, then add body-only tools as you need them. Sealey's SV12 range covers drills, impact drivers, ratchet wrenches, grinders, and polishers on a 12V system; Premier's SV20 series steps up to 20V brushless motors for heavier work. Check the voltage and battery capacity—2Ah cells suit light-duty jobs, but you'll want spares or higher Ah packs if you're running angle grinders or saws all day.

The main choice is voltage. 12V platforms are compact and lighter—useful if you're working in tight panels, dash cavities, or overhead for long stretches. Torque is lower, so they suit fastening, polishing, and drilling up to about 10mm in mild steel. 20V platforms deliver more grunt for cutting and grinding, but the batteries and tool bodies add weight.

Kits include batteries and a charger; body-only units assume you already own compatible cells. Check the Ah rating—a 2Ah battery might give you twenty minutes of angle-grinder run time, while a 4Ah or 5Ah cell doubles that. If you're buying into a new platform, starting with a kit and adding bodies later usually costs less than buying batteries separately.

Brushless motors (marked on some SV20 tools) run cooler and drain the battery slower than brushed equivalents, worth the extra if the tool will see regular use. For occasional jobs, a brushed 12V drill or impact driver does fine. Match the tool to the task: impact drivers for repetitive fastening, combi drills when you need a chuck and clutch settings, ratchet wrenches for tight spaces where a socket won't swing.
