Grit Boxes

Grit boxes keep rock salt or sand dry and ready when ice hits. Built from polyethylene or similar, they resist corrosion and UV, so they stay usable outdoors year-round. Sizes here run from roughly 75 litres—enough for a small yard or loading bay—up to 200 litres for larger sites. The mobile cart on wheels suits multi-zone coverage; static boxes work where you know the slip risk. A lid that seals properly matters—damp grit clumps and loses bite.

Pick capacity by site size and refill frequency. A 75-litre box covers maybe 50–70 square metres per fill, depending on how heavy you spread; 200 litres stretches that to 150 square metres or more. If you're treating car parks, loading docks, or long walkways, go larger or add a second box to cut trips. The wheeled cart makes sense when you're moving between areas—loading bays, ramps, multiple entrances—but the castors add a failure point, so check tyre size and whether the axle is steel or plastic.

Lids should hinge and latch securely. Rain turns grit into concrete; a loose lid in wind is useless. Look for UV-stabilised polyethylene if the box sits in full sun—cheaper plastics crack after a season or two. Some boxes include a scoop holder or internal bracket; if not, keep a separate scoop nearby or you'll be shovelling with your hands at 6 a.m. Rock salt is the standard fill—it works down to around –7°C. Below that, or on painted surfaces where salt etches, sand gives traction without the chemical bite. Fill the box before the first frost; suppliers run short once the freeze starts.
