Braking

Brake pipe flaring tools, bleeders, and air brake test gauges for working on hydraulic and pneumatic braking systems. Tools here are for making new brake lines on site, bleeding fluid systems, and testing commercial vehicle air circuits. If you're flaring pipe in situ or bench-mounting during a cab-off repair, pick the tool that fits the access you have and the SAE, DIN, or metric standard you need.

Flaring tools come in two types. Micro or on-vehicle flaring tools fit into tight spaces — behind a chassis rail, under a dash, or alongside a subframe — so you can make a single or double flare without unbolting the entire run. These handle 3/16" or 4.75mm pipe and save you pulling a van apart to replace one corroded section. Turret or bench flaring kits work on longer lengths off the vehicle, with multiple die sizes for different diameters and flare types. If you're making up custom lines or doing full brake pipe runs on a restoration, a turret kit gives you the capacity and rigidity for consistent results.

Check which flare standard the vehicle needs before you start. SAE J513 (single and double flare) is common on Japanese and American vehicles, DIN 74234 (bubble or ISO flare) on European makes. The angles differ, so a SAE double flare won't seal in a DIN union. Most hydraulic brake systems use DOT 3, DOT 4, or DOT 5.1 fluid — a pneumatic bleeder speeds up the process if you're flushing a contaminated system or bleeding a long circuit with several calipers. Air brake test gauges plug into service lines on trucks and trailers to check reservoir pressure, governor cut-in, and hold time during a roadworthiness test or a post-repair check.
