Drum Handling
Drum handling gear covers adaptors, dollies, trolleys, and taps for moving and dispensing from 205-litre drums. The adaptors listed here — DIN 61, Berg 58mm, Mauser 69mm, US Buttress 64mm, Trisure 56mm — fit different drum neck threads, so check your drum brand before ordering. Dollies let you shift full drums without a forklift; trolleys tip and pour. Taps give you controlled flow for decanting oils, coolants, or chemicals straight from the bung.

Drum adaptors are machined to match specific manufacturer threads. DIN 61/31 is the most common European standard (61mm diameter, 31mm long thread), found on steel drums from suppliers across Europe. Mauser drums use a wider 69mm neck; Berg a narrower 58mm. US Buttress (64mm) suits American-spec drums, common on imported lubricants. Trisure (56mm) is less frequent but still turns up on specialist chemical containers. An adaptor that doesn't match the thread will cross-thread or leak under pressure, so measure the drum neck or check the manufacturer's spec sheet before fitting a pump or tap.
Dollies and trolleys handle the weight. A 205-litre drum of oil weighs over 180kg when full — too much to shift safely by hand. A drum dolly is a low platform on castors; you tip the drum onto it and roll. Models with a handle give you steering control on uneven floors. A drum and barrel trolley grips the drum upright, then tilts it for pouring; useful if you're decanting into smaller containers or filling equipment directly. Check the wheel type: hard nylon suits smooth concrete, soft rubber grips better on rough or painted surfaces but wears faster.
Taps thread into the 3/4-inch BSP bung hole (standard on most steel drums). Brass or zinc die-cast bodies resist corrosion from oils and water-based fluids; lockable taps prevent accidental discharge or tampering. Flow rate depends on the tap's bore and the fluid viscosity — a thin hydraulic oil will run faster than a heavy gear oil through the same tap. If you're dispensing flammable liquids, earth the drum and use a bonding strap to the receiving container; static discharge is a real ignition risk with low-conductivity fuels and solvents.
