Metal cans handle knocks better and don't swell in heat, but they're heavier and rust if the lining cracks. Plastic cans are lighter and won't corrode, though UV degrades them over time if left outdoors. Both types need a proper breather or flexible spout to pour without glugging — a rigid spout on a sealed can just makes a mess.

Colour-coding matters for mixed fuel. Red is petrol, black is diesel, green is usually two-stroke or a second fuel type. Using the same can for different fuels leaves residue that can wreck a two-stroke or foul injectors, so pick a colour and stick with it.

Adaptors and multi-tube spouts let you decant without overspill, useful when you're filling a narrow neck or working off a tailgate. Vehicle brackets keep cans secure and stop them becoming projectiles if you brake hard. Check the bracket fits your can diameter before ordering — a 5-litre and a 20-litre jerry can aren't the same width.
