Socket Sets

Socket sets group the most-used sizes together so you're not hunting through loose sockets mid-job. Common configurations include shallow and deep sockets in 1/4″, 3/8″, or 1/2″ drive, often with a ratchet and extension bars. Deep sockets clear long studs and recessed fasteners; shallow sockets fit tight spaces. Impact-rated sets use thicker walls and through-hardened steel to handle the shock loads from an impact wrench without cracking.

Match the drive size to your torque needs. 1/4″ drive suits smaller fixings and confined work where bulk is a problem. 3/8″ drive is the workhorse for general mechanical and maintenance tasks. 1/2″ drive is for heavy fastenings, suspension work, and anything that needs real grunt. If you run an impact wrench, check the set is marked for impact use — standard chrome sockets can shatter under sudden loads.

Check the socket profile. Six-point grips the flat faces of a fastener and spreads load evenly, reducing the chance of rounding. Twelve-point lets you swing the ratchet in a tighter arc but increases slip risk on corroded or over-torqued fixings. Bi-hex (twelve-point with deeper engagement) splits the difference. Some sets include crow-foot spanners for side-access nuts or Torx and hex bits for fasteners a socket won't reach.

Case layout matters if you work mobile or on site. Rail clips keep sockets in order and let you spot a missing size at a glance. Blow-moulded trays fit tool chests but can crack if you drop the case or overload a drawer. Metal or tough polymer cases survive rough handling better.
