Tyre Buffers

Tyre buffers are pneumatic tools for removing tread rubber and preparing puncture sites before patching or plugging. The rotating cone strips damaged material cleanly without tearing the carcass, leaving a keyed surface for adhesive or plug insertion. Used mainly in truck tyre repair and retreading work, where fast, controlled abrasion matters more than hand rasping.

Most tyre buffers run a tapered cone or drum at high speed — typically 15,000–20,000 RPM — driven by shop air at 90 PSI or above. The cone diameter and grit determine how aggressively you cut: coarse grits remove bulk rubber quickly, finer grades finish the surface for bonding. Carbide-embedded cones last longer than aluminium oxide when buffing steel-belted radials; replace the cone when the cutting face glazes or the profile wears flat.

Check the arbor thread matches your cone supply before buying. Most use a standard 5/8" or M14 thread, but older kits vary. The tool should spin freely under no load and hold speed under moderate pressure — if it bogs down or vibrates, check the air supply and regulator setting. A buffer that stalls mid-cut will scorch the rubber and ruin the prep.

Use the tool with ventilation or dust extraction. Buffing generates fine rubber dust that clogs filters and coats everything nearby. Safety glasses and a dust mask are minimum; better shops run a local exhaust hood. For occasional puncture repairs, a smaller cone and lower air consumption make the job easier without sacrificing finish quality.
