Shears & Scissors

Pneumatic shears for cutting sheet metal, mesh, plastic sheet, and similar materials where a jigsaw or disc cutter would warp the edge or leave too wide a kerf. Faster than hand snips on long cuts, less heat than angle-grinder work. Sealey air shears on this page suit body work, ductwork, and general fabrication.

Most air shears use three blades — a centre blade that reciprocates between two outer blades. The outer blades guide the material and set the cut line; the centre blade does the shearing. Blades wear on the cutting edge and eventually need replacement. Match replacement blades to the shear model number (e.g. blades for the SA56 won't fit a different body). Keep spares if you're working away from suppliers.

Pistol-grip models suit vertical cuts and working around curves; in-line bodies give more reach into tight spots. Throat depth — the distance from blade to body — determines how far you can reach into a sheet without folding it. Check the maximum material thickness in the spec; exceeding it bends blades or stalls the motor. Air shears work on mild steel, aluminium, stainless (depending on gauge), corrugated sheet, and most plastics. They won't cut hardened steel or thick bar stock.

Run air shears at the recommended pressure (usually 90 psi) through a 10 mm or larger bore hose. Lower pressure reduces cutting force; higher pressure wears seals faster without much gain in speed. An inline oiler keeps the motor lubricated. Clean swarf out of the blade housing at the end of each shift — packed metal filings jam the reciprocating mechanism.
