Match the sander type to the job. Random orbital sanders (typically 150 mm) leave the finest finish and work across the grain without leaving swirl marks — best for final prep before paint or topcoat. Standard orbital sanders (palm models, 75–150 mm pad) cut faster but leave visible scratches unless you step through the grits; use them for rough shaping or when the surface gets another layer. Belt sanders strip old finishes and level welds quickly, but they're aggressive — keep them moving or you'll gouge the workpiece. Flat-bed and in-line models reach into recesses and up to edges that circular pads can't.
Check the pad fixing: hook-and-loop (Velcro-style) takes standard sanding discs and swaps in seconds; PSA (pressure-sensitive adhesive) discs are cheaper per sheet but slower to change and leave residue when you peel them. For dust extraction, a shroud and vacuum port keep the work visible and stop the pad clogging; run a separator bucket before the vac filter or you'll block it in minutes. Most air sanders want 90 PSI and 4–6 CFM — a small compressor will cycle constantly under load, so size the tank and pump to the duty cycle you're running. Composite housings are lighter for overhead work; metal bodies take more punishment on a bench or floor.
