Impact Wrenches

Air impact wrenches for wheel work, assembly lines, and heavy equipment maintenance. Drive sizes run from 3/8" for light fasteners through to 1" for truck axles and earthmoving machines. Twin-hammer mechanisms deliver higher torque than single-hammer units; composite bodies cut weight and insulate against cold. Match the square drive to your socket set and check the free-speed torque rating against the fasteners you're shifting.

Square drive size determines socket compatibility and the torque range you can use. 3/8" handles most automotive work up to wheel nuts on light vans; 1/2" covers cars, light commercials, and trailer hubs; 3/4" is standard for articulated trucks and agricultural machinery; 1" is for earthmovers, coaches, and heavy plant where fastener loads exceed 1,000 ft·lb. Stubby models fit between twin rear wheels and around suspension arms where a full-length anvil won't clear.

Twin-hammer mechanisms use two weights instead of one, so each impact is lighter but the frequency doubles. That gives smoother operation and higher sustained torque without the jarring kick of a single-hammer tool. Composite housings weigh less than steel and don't freeze your hand in winter, but metal housings tolerate more abuse on site. Butterfly (pistol) grips suit repetitive work; straight grips give better access in confined spaces but transfer more vibration to your wrist.

Free speed and maximum torque are measured without load. Working torque depends on air pressure, hose diameter, and how long you hold the trigger—short bursts deliver more peak force than a sustained pull. Use an inline regulator and check the tool's CFM requirement against your compressor's output at the pressure you're running. Under-supplying air costs you torque and wears the hammer mechanism faster.
