Transformers

Site transformers step down mains voltage to 110V centre-tapped-to-earth (55V-0-55V), the standard for power tools on construction and industrial sites where reduced-voltage working is required. Portable units from 1.5kVA to 5kVA suit light trades and mobile work; larger 10kVA models handle multiple tools or high-draw equipment simultaneously. Check the transformer's continuous rating in kVA against your total tool load — undersizing causes thermal trips and voltage sag under startup surge.

Transformer capacity is stated in kilovolt-amperes (kVA), roughly equivalent to kilowatts for resistive loads but lower for inductive motors due to power factor. A 3kVA unit runs most single hand tools; 5kVA covers a grinder and drill together; 10kVA handles site lighting, a large breaker, or several trades working concurrently. Add 20–30% headroom for motor inrush — a 2kW grinder can pull 6kW for half a second on startup.

Vented enclosures improve cooling and allow longer duty cycles in warm conditions or under sustained load. Sealed cases are lighter and easier to carry but rely on convection, so avoid blocking the vents. Single or twin 16A outlets suit general cordless-charger and handtool work; 32A sockets are for larger breakers, mixers, or compressors. Confirm the output plug type matches your site leads — most UK/Irish transformers use IEC 60309 yellow 110V connectors (16A round, 32A larger round), not 13A domestic plugs.

Centre-tapped-to-earth topology limits shock voltage to 55V if a tool case becomes live, significantly safer than 230V but not inherently safe — always use an RCD (residual current device) upstream and check tool leads for damage. IP ratings (if marked) indicate splash/dust ingress protection; IP44 is typical for outdoor site use. Thermal overload cutouts protect the windings; if the unit trips repeatedly under rated load, check for a short circuit in the tool or an accumulation of dust inside the transformer vents.
