Retracting Cable Reels
Retracting cable reels mount overhead or to a wall and wind in automatically when you're done. Spring-loaded drum keeps the cable taut and off the floor. Common lengths run from 10m to 25m; single- or dual-socket versions suit different outlet needs. Sealey units use a self-locking ratchet so the cable stops where you pull it, then retracts on a tug.

Length matters more than you'd think. A 10m reel reaches about seven metres in practice once you account for mounting height and the arc of the cable. If you're wiring across a wide bay or need to reach multiple bays, 15m or 25m versions make sense. Single-socket reels work for dedicated tools; dual-socket models let you run two lighter loads — check the aggregate rating on the drum label before plugging in a welder and a grinder at once.
Mount height affects usability. Too low and the cable drags; too high and you're tugging hard to release more length. Most mechanics fix them around two to two-and-a-half metres off the floor. The spring mechanism wears over time if you yank the cable out fast repeatedly — pull smoothly and the ratchet engages cleanly. If the drum stops retracting fully, the spring may need re-tensioning or the cable's kinked inside the housing. Inspect the socket and plug terminations every few months; vibration and repeated coiling can loosen connections.
