It’s not too late to protect your decking from the winter!

That’s it. Summer is officially over. We’re now in autumn and before you know it, winter will be here. Still, let’s look on the bright side. The quicker we get through autumn and winter the sooner it will be spring!

Make sure your decking lasts in the meantime. Protect it by doing this.

Clean the timber

Go over the timber strips with a pressure washer and blast away any residue that has taken up residency. Use the washer to clean the wood down to the basics, this will provide you with a good base layer to apply a wood treatment.

We have covered the basics of cleaning decking comprehensively in a previous blog from Triace. Click here to learn more about the right way to do this and you’ll be ready to move onto the next stage.

Let the decking dry out

Before you do anything else, leave the decking to dry for a couple of day. This can be tricky depending on the weather, check in late summer or early autumn though and this should give you a window of opportunity to do this in between pockets of rain.

A 48 hour period should be more than enough to ensure the decking is ready for a top coat of protector.

Apply a protective covering

Once the decking is clean and dry it’s time to give it a winter water-proofing. You can choose specially designed wood protectors, stains or oils, all of which provide a decent level of protection. These can be applied with brushes or decking pads, go up and down each strip in turn taking extra care not to miss any sections of timber.

After you have covered the entire area, leave the stain to dry and once this is accomplished the wood should be ready for whatever the winter has in store.

See, decking preparation is simple. If you need a pressure washer to help with the task we have plenty for sale at Triace. You can contact us for more details.
