Match motor power and speed range to the work. A 350–400W bench drill suits general metalwork up to 13mm in mild steel; 750W and above handles larger capacities and harder alloys. Sixteen speeds give finer control than five, especially when drilling stainless or brass where surface speed makes the difference between a clean hole and a ruined bit.

Check the quill travel and throat depth against your typical stock size. A 150mm throat clears the centre of a 300mm-wide plate; anything smaller and you're repositioning constantly. JT3 and JT6 tapers are standard—replace the chuck if you want keyless convenience, but verify the arbor size first.

Coolant systems and mortising attachments extend what a pillar drill can do. Flood coolant keeps long drills cool in steel and clears swarf from deep holes. Mortising heads turn the machine into a square-hole cutter for timber frame joints, though you'll need hollow-chisel sets to match the width you're cutting.
