Chisel Mortiser
Chisel mortisers cut clean, square-sided mortises in timber by combining a rotating drill bit with a hollow square chisel. The auger removes most of the waste, the chisel walls shear the corners — faster and more accurate than drilling multiple holes and chiselling by hand. Used in joinery, cabinetmaking, and timber framing wherever mortise-and-tenon joints are needed.

The chisel size determines the width of the mortise. Common sizes run from 1/4" up to 3/4", occasionally beyond. Pick the chisel to match your tenon thickness — a 1/2" chisel cuts a 1/2" mortise. Most machines accept multiple chisel sets, so one mortiser handles different joint sizes as the work changes.
Drill and chisel sets are matched pairs. The auger diameter must suit the chisel bore — too loose and the chisel wanders, too tight and friction burns the bit. Replace worn or damaged bits with the correct size for your chisel. Check that the chisel is sharp and square; a blunt edge crushes fibres instead of shearing them, and a twisted chisel leaves ragged walls.
Bench mortisers bolt down and offer the most rigidity. Depth stops, fence adjustments, and hold-downs are standard. Hollow mortising attachments for pillar drills are an option if space or budget is tight, though they lack the dedicated clamping and alignment of a purpose-built machine. Match motor power to chisel size — larger chisels need more torque to cut cleanly without stalling.
