Ball Joint Covers
A ball joint cover is a rubber protective housing on the ball joints of the steering rod, which protects them from the environment, moisture, dirt, dust and other particles. These covers can be of different types and shapes. Such housing can be in a form of a ring, bell or tube – it depends on which node it is used with. However, ball joint covers have one but extremely important task: to protect the unit from foreign objects. Such covers re often confused with oil seals. They are very much alike indeed, but have different purposes. Oil seals are necessary to prevent lubricant leaking from the mechanism. As a rule, ball joint covers are made of corrugated rubber, due to which the accessory can be compressed freely and can change shape. However, under the influence of temperature fluctuations, mechanical effect and various technical fluids, ball joint housings have a rather short service life – not more than a year.
