FFP ratings and filter cartridges

Disposable masks carry FFP ratings: FFP1 filters at least 80% of airborne particles and suits non-toxic dust (wood, concrete, general workshop dust). FFP2 filters 94% minimum and covers moderate-toxicity dust — MDF, metal grinding dust, some agricultural dust. FFP3 filters 99% and handles fine or toxic particulate: asbestos, silica, lead dust, welding fume, spray mist from solvent paints. Valved versions reduce heat buildup during extended wear. Fold-flat masks pack smaller; cup masks hold shape and often seal better on varied face shapes.

Reusable half-masks take screw-on cartridge filters. Match the cartridge type to the hazard: A-class filters organic vapours (solvents, thinners, petrol, most paint vapours); ABEK adds inorganic gases and acid gases (chlorine, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide); P3 filters fine particulate. Combined cartridges — A2P3, ABEK1P3 — cover both vapour and dust in one unit. Replace cartridges when you smell vapour breakthrough or when breathing resistance increases. Store unused cartridges sealed; exposure to air degrades the activated carbon even when not worn.

Check the seal before every shift. Disposable masks should press flat against the face with no gaps at the nose bridge or cheeks. Half-masks need both straps tensioned evenly. Facial hair breaks the seal — if you can't shave, you need supplied-air respiratory protection, not a mask.
