Matching glove type to the job

Gauntlets extend past the wrist — useful when your forearm needs shielding from splashes, grit, or heat. Nitrile-cuffed versions seal out liquids; PVC gauntlets up to 450mm cover most of the forearm during caustic work or cleaning tank interiors. Shot-blasting gauntlets (typically 585mm) are heavier, built to withstand abrasive media bouncing off steel at close range. If you don't need forearm coverage, cuffed gloves are lighter and faster to pull on.

Palm coating changes grip and durability. Nitrile resists oil and handles rough edges without tearing as fast as bare fabric. Tactouch coatings (found on some mechanic's gloves) keep fingertip sensitivity high — you can feel bolt threads and connector pins through the material. Hide-palm rigger's gloves trade some dexterity for cut and abrasion resistance; useful for lifting sharp-edged steel or working with wire rope. Lightweight precision-grip gloves use thin polyurethane coatings — enough grip for assembly work, not enough for handling wet bar stock.

Thermal gloves add an insulating liner, usually acrylic or terry loop, under the outer shell. The trade-off: thicker material means less finger feel, so they suit outdoor fitting or cold-store work better than precision tasks. Check the cuff length if you're reaching into machinery — a short cuff can ride down and leave the wrist exposed. Sizes matter more than with most PPE; an overlarge glove bunches in the palm and reduces control, an undersized one splits at the seams under load.
