Ear defenders come in three main styles: folding (compact, easy to carry), clip-on (attach to most hard hats), and standard headband. All three give roughly similar noise reduction — around 25–30 dB depending on the model — so choice comes down to how you wear them. Folding types suit tool bags and occasional use; clip-on defenders keep your hard hat in place if you're moving between loud and quiet zones; standard headband models spread pressure more evenly for all-day wear.

Disposable foam plugs block more high-frequency noise than defenders and sit inside the ear canal, so they work under bump caps or where headband defenders get in the way. Roll them tight, insert, and let them expand — improper fit cuts protection in half. The 100-pair and 200-pair boxes suit individual use; dispenser units with 250 or 500 pairs make sense for shared workshop spaces or site cabins.

Corded plugs stay around your neck between tasks. Useful if you're in and out of noisy areas — forklifts, compressor sheds, machine shops — and you'd otherwise lose loose plugs in a pocket. Check plug condition regularly; torn foam or hardened material won't seal properly.

Bump caps protect against stationary hazards — pipework, van roofs, low joists — but they are not hard hats. No falling-object rating, no chin strap. If the risk is impact from above, use a proper EN 397 helmet. Baseball-style bump caps fit under defenders or plugs without interference and suit trades working in tight spaces where a full hard hat catches on everything.
